philadelphia dentistIn our local Philadelphia dentist office, we treat patients of all ages and work with a lot of people that are experiencing tooth sensitivity.  This is a normal problem to have but can still be uncomfortable and make it difficult to enjoy a meal with friends or to even brush teeth.  If you have a shooting pain when eating your favorite ice cream or even eating a piece of bread, give us a call.

There are multiple ways that we can treat your sensitive teeth in our dental office.  First, we need to understand what is causing your tooth pain in the first place.  By conducting a dental exam, we can find out what is making your teeth hurt and create a treatment plan for solving the issue.  Here are some of the common ways that we treat sensitive teeth.

  • Performing a teeth cleaning.  When bacteria get on your teeth and gums, it can create pain and sensitivity.  By cleaning your teeth, they can start to feel better.
  • Fixing cavities.  If you have a cavity, the infected area of your tooth can start to hurt especially when eating.  We can remove the infected area and use the filling to strengthen the tooth.  In our Philadelphia dentist office, we use natural colored fillings so that no one can tell you ever had a cavity in the first place.
  • Correcting the damage.  It is common for teeth to become cracked or chipped while playing sports or even eating something hard like a nut or a piece of ice.  When this happens, we can restore your damaged tooth using a dental veneer or a dental crown.  Both will look completely natural, and the sensitivity that was caused by the damage will go away.
  • Strengthening teeth.  When the enamel, the outer layer of the tooth, wears away dentin is exposed.  Dentin is full of tiny pores that contain of nerve endings.  When you bite down on something or even breathe, those nerves can send pain signals to the brain.  We can treat teeth that have lost enamel by sealing them or performing a bonding procedure to close up the pores inside of the dentin.
  • Treating gum disease.  At times, teeth can become sensitive due to gum disease.  When bacteria get underneath the gums, it can make them swell, bleed, and even hurt.  By removing the bacteria, we can solve the problem and help gums to heal naturally.  If the disease has spread, a gum graft may be necessary to close up any gaps in the gum tissue.
  • Replacing fillings.  Your teeth may be sensitive due to an outdated filling that has worn away.  They are not meant to last forever so if your cavities were treated years ago, it may be time to replace your filling in order to prevent sensitivity.
