Philadelphia DentistAs an expert Philadelphia dentist, we help patients to appear younger by keeping their teeth and gums in good health.  Dark, stained, and worn teeth make a person appear older.  Even people that are generally considered young can appear aged due to their teeth.  When people lose a tooth, or teeth, it impacts their appearance even further by making them appear older and unhealthy.  Regular trips to the dentist, and practicing preventative care at home, can help you to appear youthful and rejuvenated.

Risk Factors for Appearing Older

There are several things that can make your teeth appear stained and aged.  By avoiding these key risk factors, you can maintain a youthful appearance for a longer period of time.

  • Smoking.  This is a major risk factor for making your teeth and skin appear older.  Smokers expose their body to a variety of chemicals and tobacco products place a sticky plaque onto your teeth.  This can make your teeth appear yellow and stained while making you more prone to cavities. Quit smoking to preserve your teeth and your entire body.
  • Drinking tea.  While tea has other health benefits, it can severely stain your teeth.  If you are an avid tea drinker try sipping it through a straw or brushing immediately after finishing your cup.
  • Skipping dental checkups.  It is important to see your Philadelphia dentist twice a year.  These regular teeth cleanings and checkups will remove plaque, tartar, and bacteria that can cause cavities and stains.  Your teeth and gums will appear healthier and be healthier with regular checkups.
  • Drinking wine.  Red wine contains tannins that will stain your teeth.  The only way to prevent the stains is avoidance or brushing immediately afterwards.  If you are going to dinner or a party, carry a portable toothbrush with you and brush after drinking.
  • Acidic drinks. The acid in soda can damage your teeth.  If you are a big soda drinker, consider switching to water or a low calorie, non-acidic drink instead.
  • Candy.  If you are eating candy or anything else that stains your tongue, it will likely stain your teeth, as well.  Avoid these types of foods processed with heavy food coloring.

By eliminating bad habits, foods, and drinks that can stain your teeth from your daily lifestyle, it will improve the chances of your teeth remaining sparkling white as you age.  Cutting out the risk factors, however, is not enough to keep your smile looking youthful.  You must also practice good oral hygiene at home.  It is important to brush your teeth at least twice a day and preferably after meals.  You should also floss daily to remove the plaque building up in between your teeth.

Schedule an appointment with our Philadelphia dentist office twice a year in order to have your teeth thoroughly cleaned. This will remove built up plaque and stains.  Your teeth will naturally stay whiter and be in better health.  You can also have your teeth whitened professionally so that they sparkle like they did in your youth.  Through a variety of cosmetic dental procedures, we can transform your smile and help you to keep that youthful glow.
